Umoja Visits Colleges

Visiting college opens students’ eyes to the possibilities and the realities.

IMG_3483.jpgUmoja’s college trips have been central to our mission since the organization was founded in 1997. This year 25 Manley High School seniors spent six days visiting eleven colleges and universities. Colleges included: Bradley University, Coe College, Eastern Illinois University, Indiana State University, Monmouth College, Northern Illinois University, Purdue University, University of Cincinnati, University of Iowa, Western Illinois University and University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

Our young people would not have the opportunity to visit college campuses without this college tour. And how can they imagine themselves at college without having set foot on a college campus? What makes Umoja’s trips extra special is the chance to see alumni on campus. This year students visited more than 20 Umoja alumni. Hearing about college from students who lived in the same neighborhood, attended the same high school and shared many of the same experiences gives our current high school students the shot of energy and realism they need as they finish the first semester of senior year. All of the students came home excited to work hard on college, financial aid and scholarship applications.
