Umoja Prepares Students for the Future at Tilden Career Day Event

On May 22 more than 30 volunteers spent the morning at Tilden High School working with juniors as they explored different careers and prepared for college applications.

Tilden, one of Umoja’s newer partner schools, hosted a similar volunteer event in the fall with its seniors. This time they wanted to create an opportunity for Tilden’s juniors so they could start preparing for graduation and beyond. Umoja was excited to work with the talented team at Tilden to design an event that could be equally inspiring for both volunteers and students.

Volunteers from the community representing different career sectors spent the morning with over 75 juniors by participating in career panels and small group workshops. The volunteers shared some of their insights about their professional paths and important information about their jobs. The students were engaged and asked a lot of questions about their education, training and experiences in their respective fields.

The working sessions in the second part of the morning enabled the students to dive deeper into the various career routes and work on their college applications. For most of the volunteers it was their first time working with Tilden students, and the experience left a lasting impression on each individual. One volunteer noted, “The break out groups allowed me to build a relationship and have one-on-one time with the students. I was able to connect with them on a personal level.”

The students also valued the experience. This was Tilden’s first event that targeted college and career preparation with juniors through volunteer engagement. Throughout the event many students commented on how important it was to have meaningful exposure to people working in the areas of interest to them. One student said, "I wasn't even planning to go to college, but now I see how getting a degree can really help me reach my goals."

Tilden teachers and administrators were impressed by the collaboration and participation from the juniors and inspired by the opportunity the event provided for their students. Tilden is committed to supporting their students and wants to provide them with as many opportunities as possible. Many of the teachers said that they had never seen their students so excited about their futures before this event.
