Protiviti Recognizes Umoja Students
Protiviti supports student success with college scholarships
Just one example of Umoja’s many inspiring corporate partnerships – Protiviti recently awarded two high school seniors at Umoja’s partner schools college scholarships! Cassandra Murff and Deonte Tanner, both seniors at Harper High School in Englewood, were selected based on grade point average (GPA), school activities and community/civic involvement.
Launched in April 2005, Protiviti's CommUnity Scholarship Program supports economically challenged Chicago students who have the spirit and aptitude to achieve their goal of attending college. Candidates are supported to apply by Umoja staff at all of our partner schools and this year more than 60 students completed applications! Protiviti’s scholarship committee then selected finalists to participate in interviews with employees and narrowed it down to our new scholarship recipients.
The scholarships provide not just financial support but on-on-one mentoring from Protiviti employees and ongoing support through college graduation. Scholarships are renewable on an annual basis as long as minimum GPA requirements are met. Including Murff and Tanner, Protiviti has supported a total of 16 scholars on campuses across the United States. Six students have already graduated with college degrees through the program.
"By renewing the scholarships over the course of the students' undergraduate studies, we try to personally connect our employees' donations to a positive impact on the students' lives," said Sharon Lindstrom, Umoja’s board member and a managing director in Protiviti's Chicago office who oversees the scholarship program. "One of the reasons this program has been successful is because our employees get to know these students and take a real interest in their futures."
The scholarships were entirely funded thanks to employee contributions. Protiviti’s dedication to our students’ success is truly a remarkable example of community involvement from a leader in Chicago’s corporate community!
