Stephanie joined Umoja in 2016 as a Professional Development Specialist. In this role, she supports and facilitates Umoja's professional development and training offerings.

Prior to Umoja, she was working on her Master of Education at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College in their Learning, Diversity, and Urban Studies program. She began her career in education as a K-8 Spanish teacher in Dallas, Texas through Teach For America. As a Latina, first-generation college graduate and a teacher in a low-income community to students of color, her goal was to create pathways of opportunity for her students and support them to become future change agents.

This work eventually led her to teacher recruitment where she focused on building a diverse leadership pipeline into education that would provide more mirrors for her students. In her role leading diversity recruitment efforts for Teach For America’s Midwest region, she also created internal learning experiences related to diversity & inclusion and piloted a professional development summit for Latinx college leaders.

Stephanie also holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Vanderbilt University.
